| A
rangoli is a pattern made by Indian women, or their maidservants,
outside their houses early each morning. It is more common in the
south than the North. It is believed to bring good luck, grace and
prosperity to the householders. After the pavements have been swept
of dust and washed, a grid of dots is made with rice flour. The
dots are then joined together in various ways to form intricate
designs. On special occasions or in prosperous households
with time to spare, the rangolis are filled with a multitude of
coloured powders. |
